What does 德 mean?
德 (dé) means ethics, morality, virtue or moral character. It appears in 道德 (morality), 品德 (personal character) and 美德 (virtue). It is a broad ethical term, not a promise of good fortune or superior character.
Is 德 suitable for a tattoo?
Yes, but it needs space. With 15 strokes, 德 is dense; small wrists, ankles and narrow bands can collapse the internal structure. A larger placement or a clean regular script is safer if the character must remain readable.
Design notes
Common mistakes
- Squeezing 德 into a narrow placement.
- Assuming it means “good luck” rather than ethical character.
- Choosing a fine or cursive script before a native reader verifies it.
