Choose the blessing by occasion and tone
Four-character blessings such as 万事如意 and 福寿安康 are common in New Year messages, birthdays, weddings and gifts. Two-character phrases such as 平安 are more flexible and can stand alone in a family message or travel wish. The most traditional phrase is not always the most natural choice; relationship, age, setting and spoken or written register all matter.
What each blessing page should establish
A useful page gives the phrase, pinyin, a plain-language meaning, the situations where it is normally used, and the limits of the wording. It should distinguish a wish from a guarantee and explain when a related phrase is not interchangeable. For example, 平安 is not the same as 和平, and 万事如意 is not the same as 万事胜意.
Design for the format before choosing colour
Four-character blessings suit a square or horizontal layout; two-character phrases can work horizontally or vertically; a longer proverb may need two balanced rows or calligraphic columns. Keep the phrase complete, choose a readable script and do not crop characters merely to fit a phone screen. Red and gold are traditional options, not compulsory requirements, and contrast still matters for legibility.
Keep the wish honest
- Do not present a blessing as a spell, medical intervention or financial promise.
- Do not promise that a relationship, journey or business result is guaranteed.
- Do not mix simplified and traditional forms without a deliberate reason.
- Check pinyin and the complete wording before a print or permanent design.
