Chinese zodiac animals

Chinese zodiac animals: 12 signs, characters and years

The Chinese zodiac is a twelve-year cycle associated with twelve animals. This page gives the characters, pinyin and example years for each sign, along with what the framework does and does not mean.

The zodiac is used in cultural conversations, storytelling, calendars and popular entertainment. It is not a scientific personality test and does not determine a person’s character, compatibility or future. Different Chinese-speaking communities and individuals use it in different ways.

Why the zodiac begins with the Rat

The order of the animals is a traditional cultural story and is not a scientific explanation of animal behaviour. 鼠 is the first sign, followed by 牛, 虎, 兔, 龙, 蛇, 马, 羊, 猴, 鸡, 狗 and 猪. The Chinese character is the stable written form; Romanisation and English animal names can vary.

Lunar year boundaries

A person born in January or early February may belong to the previous zodiac year because the lunar new year has not yet arrived. The exact date changes each year. Use a reliable calendar for the specific year rather than assuming that 1 January starts the Chinese zodiac year.

Animals, elements and cultural interpretations

Zodiac systems are sometimes combined with Five Elements, yin-yang and other traditional frameworks. These are cultural systems with internal rules and many interpretations. They should not be presented as a medical diagnosis, a guaranteed personality profile or a financial prediction.

Dragon and the other animals

龙 is one of the twelve zodiac animals and also has its own Mandarin Ink character guide. The zodiac page explains the full cycle; the dragon page explains the character 龙, its simplified/traditional difference and design context. Keep the two questions separate: animal symbolism and complete calendar system.

Pronunciation and writing

Pinyin is shown beneath each animal. 鼠, 牛, 虎, 兔, 龙, 蛇, 马, 羊, 猴, 鸡, 狗 and 猪 are common simplified forms. Traditional characters may differ for some signs, such as 龍 for 龙 and 雞 or 鷄 for 鸡 depending on convention. Choose one writing system consistently.

Design and learning notes

The zodiac grid can be used as a learning overview or a symbolic comparison. If an animal is used for a tattoo, logo or gift, check the character, animal image, orientation and cultural context with a fluent reader or designer. Do not claim that a zodiac sign guarantees a personality trait or lucky outcome.

What the zodiac is not

The zodiac is not a scientific classification, a legal identity, a universal compatibility system or a promise about a person’s future. It is a cultural framework. Respect the person’s own relationship to the tradition rather than telling them what their sign supposedly means.
