What does 竹 mean?

竹 (zhú) means bamboo. It is written the same in simplified and traditional Chinese. The character can also refer to bamboo material or objects in compounds, and it is the Kangxi bamboo radical used in many characters connected with bamboo.

The dictionary meaning is concrete: bamboo. In Chinese art and literature, however, bamboo also carries associations with flexibility, integrity, humility and resilience.
