The guides here are arranged around the questions that shape a usable Chinese name: how the surname affects the rhythm, how tones sound in the complete name, which characters form natural combinations, and how the name will appear in pinyin or an English-language document. They do not treat a name as a word-for-word translation of an English name.
A name character is not yet a complete name
A page for 宇 can explain that the character relates to space, the universe or a building, but those associations do not prove that 宇 should be used in every name. The surname, the second given-name character and the overall sound decide whether the combination feels natural. Use the character pages to build a shortlist, then review the full name rather than judging one character by itself.
Personal, cultural and legal checks are different
For personal use, the main goal is a name the person can pronounce, explain and comfortably use.
