Source hierarchy, not source theatre

Reference data and interpretation are separate layers. Unicode Unihan can support character identity and some readings; established dictionaries can support common meanings and compounds; actual usage in edited Chinese writing can show whether a phrase is natural. None of those automatically proves a cultural claim or a personal name recommendation. When sources disagree, the page should state the uncertainty rather than choose the most flattering answer.

Pronunciation and variants

Pinyin marks one standard reading system, but Chinese has regional speech, tone changes and context-dependent pronunciations. Polyphonic characters need examples rather than a single isolated reading. For classical text, a character may also be read differently because of a loan use or commentary tradition. A pronunciation note is a guide to the reviewed context, not a claim that every speaker says the word in exactly the same way.

How names and classical phrases are reviewed

Name checks consider the complete name: surname, syllable rhythm, tones, written form and unintended homophones. Five Elements material is treated as a traditional framework, not scientific evidence. Classical phrase checks identify the source where possible, distinguish primary text from commentary or later quotation, and preserve doubts about attribution and translation.

What cannot be verified or guaranteed

  • A character cannot guarantee luck, wealth, health, love or protection.
  • A name review cannot replace legal registration or trademark clearance.
  • A design reference cannot replace a tattoo artist's technical judgement.
  • A translation cannot capture every possible reading of a classical line.
  • A product description does not prove that a file is ready for sale.

Corrections and review dates

Corrections should identify the page, the disputed statement and the supporting source. A change may update the wording, add a qualification or mark the issue as unresolved. The visible review date should change when the substance of the page changes, not merely when the layout is adjusted.
