What does 希望 mean?
希望 (xī wàng) means hope, wish or to hope. It can describe an emotional outlook or a specific desired outcome. The context determines whether it is closer to “I hope” or “hope” as a concept.
Design notes
The two characters are different in structure but balance well in regular script. Keep the phrase together and allow enough space for the upper strokes and the lower components. It is a practical choice for a small design because the phrase is common and easy to recognize.
Simplified and traditional
希望 is written the same in simplified and traditional Chinese, so there is no form to choose.
What it does not mean
Hope is not a guarantee that the wished-for event will happen. It is a human attitude or a wish, not a promise of protection, wealth or success.
Common mistakes
- Using the phrase as a guarantee of a positive outcome.
- Separating the two characters into unrelated design elements.
- Choosing a style that makes the lower portion crowded.
