What does 平安 mean?
平安 (píng'ān) means peace and safety, or safe and sound. It is used in everyday greetings, travel wishes and family messages. It can stand alone or appear in phrases such as 平安回家 (return home safely).
Where it is used
平安 is common when someone is travelling, working away from home or recovering from a difficult period. It is also a general blessing that avoids promising wealth or success. The tone is warm and practical rather than mystical.
Design and use
As a two-character phrase, 平安 works well in a horizontal line or balanced square. Keep both characters the same visual weight and do not mirror them. If the phrase will be used in a product or permanent design, check the final wording with a native reader.
What it does not mean
平安 does not replace safety precautions, insurance, medical care or good judgment. The phrase expresses a wish for safety; it does not guarantee that nothing will go wrong.
Common mistakes
- Treating 平安 as a magical protection charm.
- Confusing it with 和平, which means peace in the sense of absence of war.
- Using a decorative script that makes the two characters hard to verify.
