Good night in Chinese: 晚安

The distinction matters because English “good night” can sometimes serve as a greeting, while Chinese usually separates the arrival greeting from the bedtime phrase. If you meet someone at night, 晚上好 is the normal greeting. If you are leaving or ending the conversation for sleep, 晚安 is natural.

晚安: good night before sleep

晚安 combines 晚 (evening or late) and 安 (peace or safety). It can be said to a partner, family member, friend or group. It may also be used when ending a late-night conversation, even if the listener is not going to bed immediately. The phrase is warm and familiar rather than formal.

晚上好: good evening on arrival

晚上好 (wǎnshang hǎo) means “good evening” and is used when greeting someone in the evening. It follows the pattern of 早上好 (good morning) and 大家好 (hello everyone). It is not a bedtime phrase and should not replace 晚安 at the end of the day.

Other bedtime phrases

睡个好觉 (shuì ge hǎo jiào) means “sleep well.” 做个好梦 (zuò ge hǎo mèng) means “have a good dream” or “sweet dreams.” 早点休息 (zǎo diǎn xiūxi) means “rest early,” while 明天见 (míngtiān jiàn) means “see you tomorrow.” These phrases may fit the same bedtime context but are not identical.

晚安 is pronounced wǎn'ān, with the syllable boundary clear. The phrase is written the same in simplified and traditional Chinese. 晚上好 is wǎnshang hǎo, with 上 often light or neutral in speech. Keep the complete phrase together and avoid confusing 晚安 with 早安 (good morning).

Formality and relationship

晚安 can be used in close relationships, family conversations, messages and online chats. With a colleague or someone you do not know well, a simple 晚安 may still be fine when the context is clearly about ending the day. A more formal closing may add 祝您 or another complete sentence, but the basic phrase remains widely understood.

晚安 is a compact two-character phrase and works well in a square or horizontal design.
