The phrase is used when meeting someone in the morning, answering a message or beginning a conversation. It is a greeting, not a statement about the weather or a promise that the day will be good. The right form depends on time, relationship and tone.

早上好 and 早安

早上好 is common in everyday conversation, schools, workplaces and customer settings. 早安 is compact and often appears in messages, broadcasts, cards and more formal or literary contexts. Both mean “good morning,” but 早安 can sound more deliberate or polished.

早: a casual familiar greeting

In some casual settings, people greet one another with a single 早 (zǎo). It functions like a shortened “morning” and is usually used with classmates, friends or familiar colleagues. It can sound too clipped or informal with a stranger or in a very formal context.

上午好 and time ranges

上午好 (shàngwǔ hǎo) means “good morning” or “good late morning,” but it is less common than 早上好 in ordinary conversation. 早上 generally refers to the earlier part of the morning; 上午 covers the period after early morning until noon. The exact boundary is not fixed, so context and local habit matter.

Polite forms

您早 (nín zǎo) is a respectful short morning greeting. 早上好，您 is not normally the way to add 您; politeness is usually built into the greeting or the sentence around it. With a teacher, elder or formal guest, 早安 or 早上好 plus an appropriate title can sound natural.

Pronunciation and written form

早上好 is zǎoshang hǎo, with 上 often light in speech. 早安 is zǎo'ān. 早 is zǎo. 早上好 and 早安 are written the same in simplified and traditional Chinese. 晚安 is a night phrase, not a morning greeting.

Responses and follow-up

A person may reply with 早上好, 早 or 早安. The conversation can continue with 你早, 今天怎么样？ or a specific question. A greeting alone does not need a long response; tone and relationship determine what feels natural.

早上好 is a compact three-character phrase. 早安 is two characters and often works well in a square or card layout. Avoid mixing 早安 with 晚安 in the same morning design, and keep the complete phrase together when the meaning depends on all of the characters.
