Good afternoon in Chinese: 下午好

Time-of-day greetings follow a simple pattern with 好: 早上好, 中午好, 下午好, 晚上好. The boundary between periods is not exact, so people choose according to local habit, workplace culture and the moment of the conversation rather than a strict clock rule.

下午好: good afternoon

下午好 is a clear and polite greeting from roughly early afternoon until late afternoon or early evening. It works in shops, offices, schools, meetings and messages. It is more likely to appear as a greeting on arrival than as a farewell.

中午好: good midday

中午好 (zhōngwǔ hǎo) is used around noon or lunchtime. It can be useful in formal settings, broadcasts or when the time is clearly around midday. In casual conversation, a simple 你好 or 吃了吗 may sometimes be more natural depending on the relationship.

午安: formal or literary afternoon greeting

午安 (wǔ'ān) can mean “good afternoon” or wish someone a peaceful midday rest. It is less common in everyday conversation than 下午好 and can sound formal, written or old-fashioned depending on the setting. It should not automatically replace 下午好 in a normal greeting.

What comes before and after

早上好 and 早安 are morning greetings. 晚上好 is “good evening” on arrival, while 晚安 is “good night” before sleep or when leaving. Do not use 晚安 as an afternoon greeting or 下午好 as a bedtime farewell.

Pronunciation and written form

下午好 is xiàwǔ hǎo, 中午好 is zhōngwǔ hǎo, and 午安 is wǔ'ān. 下午 becomes 下午 in traditional Chinese as well; 午安 is also unchanged. Keep the complete greeting together and avoid mixing time periods in the same message.

Formal, service and workplace use

A simple 下午好 can be appropriate when entering a shop, office or meeting. With a senior colleague or formal guest, 您好 can be added in a complete sentence or used separately. The greeting should fit the relationship; adding more polite words does not automatically make it better.

Design and learning notes

下午好 is a compact three-character phrase and works in cards, signs and learning material. Keep 上午, 中午, 下午 and 晚上 distinct so the greeting matches the time of day. If the phrase is for a scheduled message or physical sign, check the time range rather than assuming it covers the whole day.

What it does not mean

Good afternoon is a time-based greeting. It does not promise a good day, good luck or a certain outcome, and it is not a substitute for an apology or a request. The greeting’s politeness comes from context and tone, not from the words alone.
