I don’t understand in Chinese: 我不懂

English uses “I don’t understand” for many situations. Chinese often distinguishes whether you lack knowledge, cannot follow spoken language, cannot understand written material or do not grasp a concept. Choosing the right phrase helps the other person know what kind of explanation you need.

我不懂 and 我不明白

我不懂 (wǒ bù dǒng) means “I don’t understand” and is common when the topic, explanation or instructions are unclear. 我不明白 (wǒ bù míngbai) is close in meaning but often emphasizes that something is not clear to you. Both can sound direct; adding 不好意思 or 请问 can soften the request for explanation.

我不知道: I don’t know

我不知道 (wǒ bù zhīdào) means “I don’t know.” It answers a lack of information, not a failure to understand the language. If someone asks what time a shop closes and you have no information, 我不知道 is appropriate. If they speak too quickly and you cannot follow, 我听不懂 is more accurate.

听不懂 and 看不懂

我听不懂 (wǒ tīng bù dǒng) means “I don’t understand what I hear” and is used when speech is too fast, accented or unfamiliar. 我看不懂 (wǒ kàn bù dǒng) means “I don’t understand what I read or see” and can refer to characters, handwriting, diagrams or instructions. The 得/不 structure shows whether the action can be completed.

我搞不懂 and 我弄不明白

我搞不懂 (wǒ gǎo bù dǒng) is a colloquial way to say “I can’t figure it out” or “I don’t get it.” 我弄不明白 is similar and often relates to a problem or explanation. These can sound more informal than 我不懂 and may express frustration.

Asking for help

Useful follow-ups include 你可以再说一遍吗？ (“Can you say it again?”), 可以说慢一点吗？ (“Can you speak more slowly?”), 这是什么意思？ (“What does this mean?”) and 请写下来 (“Please write it down”). A clear request is usually more useful than repeating 我不懂.

Politeness and context

What it does not mean
