Chinese travel phrases
Chinese travel phrases for real situations
These guides cover greetings, politeness, prices, directions, comprehension and basic needs. They focus on phrases that are useful in shops, hotels, stations, taxis and everyday travel conversations.
Start with the situation rather than the English sentence. Chinese often uses context, verb patterns and different levels of politeness instead of a single universal translation. Each full guide explains pronunciation, when the phrase fits and what it does not promise.

More phrases worth recognising
These are useful to recognise or practise, but they need context and pronunciation review before permanent use.
Asking directions
Question patterns such as 在哪里? (where is it?) and 怎么走? (how do I get there?) are useful, but the full question should name the place or destination. Listen for 左转 (turn left), 右转 (turn right), 一直走 (go straight), 附近 (nearby) and 对面 (opposite). Do not assume that a short phrase will be understood without the destination.
Money, cards and prices
多少钱? asks the price. 可以刷卡吗? asks whether card payment is possible. 现金 (cash), 微信支付 (WeChat Pay) and 支付宝 (Alipay) are common payment words in mainland China, but payment methods, mobile coverage and merchant policies vary. Ask the merchant rather than assuming one method works everywhere.
Getting help
请帮帮我 means “please help me,” but it is general. For an emergency, use local emergency services and clear information rather than relying only on a language phrase. 我不会说中文 means “I don’t speak Chinese,” while 你会说英语吗? asks whether the other person speaks English.
Politeness and tone
Please, sorry and excuse me are not always one Chinese word. 请问 introduces a question, 不好意思 handles a small interruption, 麻烦你 asks a favour and 借过 asks to pass. Use the complete polite guide when the relationship or setting matters.
What travel phrases cannot solve
A phrase list cannot replace local rules, safety instructions, official signs or emergency services. Check current travel guidance, use translation tools carefully and ask staff or local people when a decision has legal, medical or safety consequences.
Chinese travel phrase questions
What phrases should I learn first?
你好, 谢谢, 请问, 多少钱, 洗手间在哪里 and 我不懂 cover many basic situations. Learn the pronunciation and polite context, not just the written form.
Can I use these phrases in mainland China, Taiwan or Hong Kong?
Many written forms are shared, but vocabulary, pronunciation, romanisation and preferred wording vary. Local usage and script should be checked for the destination.
Does 多少钱 work for every price question?
It is useful for a specific item or service. For formal or written contexts, 价格是多少 may sound better, and the currency should be clear.
Need a travel phrase checked?
Send the destination, situation and exact phrase you plan to use. A reply can explain politeness, regional wording and context.
