Chinese Name Generator
Build a shortlist of Chinese given names two ways: choose the meaning you want, or start from the sound of an English name. Every result is built from characters this site documents, and every result is a starting point rather than a finished registered name.
Route 1
Generate by meaning
Pick one or more directions. The generator returns two-character given-name patterns that use documented characters matching those directions.
Route 2
Start from an English name sound
Type an English first name. The tool splits it into sounds and maps each sound to a Chinese character from a fixed syllable table.
How this generator works
The meaning route only combines characters that already have a documented page or entry on this site. Each character carries a pinyin reading, a plain-English meaning and a set of direction tags. When you choose directions such as peace or strength, the tool filters the pool, ranks characters that match more than one of your choices, and then builds two-character given-name patterns.
The sound route is deliberately different. It does not claim to translate a name. It takes the sounds of an English name, matches them against a fixed table of common Chinese syllables, and shows which characters correspond to those syllables. That is a starting point for a conversation, not the official transliteration that appears in a passport or visa.
What the generator checks
Every generated pattern uses real Chinese characters with a documented reading and meaning, so the result is not a random string. The tool also marks whether both characters share a direction or balance two different directions, which helps you see whether a name is focused or deliberately mixed.
What the generator does not decide
It does not know your surname, so it cannot test the most important thing in a Chinese name: how the surname and given name sound together. It cannot hear tone sandhi, it cannot detect every homophone in every regional accent, and it cannot tell you whether a character suits a particular age, profession or family. It also does not decide between simplified and traditional characters, and it does not replace a native speaker's reaction.
Why the results are shortlists, not final names
A one-click generator that returns a single "correct" Chinese name is misleading. Two characters can each be accurate and still fail as a pair, and a pair can be beautiful in writing and awkward when spoken with a specific surname. The honest output of a generator is a shortlist that a person then tests.
What to do with your shortlist
- Add your surname and say the complete name aloud, at normal speed, several times.
- Read the name structure guide so the surname and given name sit in the right order.
- Run the shortlist through the homophone check for accidental words and tone problems.
- Compare the individual characters in the character guide before you commit.
- Ask a fluent speaker to react to the written and spoken name before you explain what it is supposed to mean.

Chinese name generator questions
Is this Chinese name generator free?
Yes. Both routes run entirely in your browser and cost nothing. No account is required and the tool does not send your input anywhere.
Can I generate a Chinese name with meaning?
Yes. The meaning route is the main feature. Choose directions such as peace, strength or wisdom, and the generator builds two-character given-name patterns from characters that match those directions.
Can this generate a Chinese name from my English name?
It can produce a sound-based starting point. It maps the sounds of your English name onto a fixed syllable table, which is roughly how many Chinese transliterations are built. It is not an official transliteration, and official documents use standard forms that a generator cannot decide.
Is the result an official Chinese name?
No. The output is a shortlist of given-name patterns. An official name depends on your surname, the Chinese-speaking region, the writing system and any registration rules that apply.
Does the generator pick a surname?
No. It only builds given names, because the surname is the fixed part of a Chinese name and it changes how the whole name sounds. Read the surname guide before you attach a given name.
Can I generate a female or male Chinese name?
The generator filters by meaning, not by gender, because Chinese name characters are not grammatically gendered. Some characters are conventionally more common in girls' or boys' names, and the boy names and girl names guides explain those tendencies.
Why does the tool say the result needs a human check?
Because a character list cannot hear the complete name. Tones, homophones, regional pronunciation and family context all change whether a shortlist works. A fluent speaker catches problems that any text tool misses.
Does the generator work without JavaScript?
No. The tool runs in your browser, so it needs JavaScript. If JavaScript is unavailable, the names by meaning index and the character guides still work as static pages.
